The Hot Adventures Of Colonel Mustard And Wenders...... The Saga Continues...
Posted: 05/05/2007 21:38:02
Well last night we loaded the car with gear & set off for **** at ****. I wanted to place a few anchors to help with a couple of rope rub points, place a few anchors to rig the Thriddle Shaft to enable us to get down to the remote & difficult to get to, fabled "****". Then I wanted to place a few anchors and rig the final pitch down to **** level. We kitted up at the portal and magaged to get all the gear into one large bag. This inclluded sheets of rubber, anchors & slings and a n 'effin huge battery drill. Bloody 'eavy Crying

The entrance has a water level to the top of ones legs, but soon shallows out.. ( So you get doused on the way in and you get doused on the way out ) Then we set off down the first & second pitches to the place where I wanted to place the first anchor..... And thats all folks !

Actually it would have been a really produtive evening if someone whose name begins with "C.M." had remembered to bring the drill bit Blush Blush

So ... Did we have time to make it to the spa for a sauna or not... as it was 7.30 we didnt think so. Instead we headed in to the **** Level for a look around. We eventually got to where the old north cross cut enters the huge **** Vein. This was blocked by a rock fall from above preventing access into the vein, but someone, I dont know who, has done a very fine job of excavating a passage up through the fall. Welld done Sir(s) Flowers

Mrs Mustards lamp was not playing by the rules, so I left her in the darkness and went exploring. Gingerly I climbed up through the dig, carefull not to dislodge any more material or damage any of the timbers holding only god knows how many tonnes of rock & rubble back. Finally after something like 15 years I was able to walk along the **** Vein and view the massive timbers forming a passage at the floor level. Looking upwards, I could not see the top of the working even with my powerful Stenlight. Walking along the base I eventually came to a large run-in that prevented further progress. This is a shame because previously it was possible to the flooded section of the vein where in the 1980s the **** had installed a walkway of planks on hangers just inches above the 100s feet deep water. With the help of a handline, walking along this walkway was quite an experience Thumb Up

Well, no U/G today. Just fell walking. 12 miles and 5040' of ascent and lots of walkers that insist on you saying "Hi" even though you are struggling up a bloody steep hill and are putting what spare energy you have left into just trying to breath enough air .. Guns
Sorry to go momentarily Off Topic but if you want a refund on yer entrance fee, see Mrs Mustard Smile

Went shopping in Ingleton. Picked up some stuff in Inglesport before going into Bernies Cafe for a milk shake. I saw a helmet in there that looked good and after trying it on, I handed over the plastic to be hit for £30. Then I handed it over again to be hit for another £30 after Mrs Mustard decided she wanted one. Arnt I a nice guy huh ? Glare

Tomorrow is a big day. Lots to do in **** Level and hopefully I can take some pics too. Seems like ages since I turned me camera on.

Deep Probings... With Nimrod & Wenders

Early morning (ish ) start saw us driving up to **** mine at **** again. The village seemed very quiet for a bank holiday. The tourists must have seen the weather forecast Laugh
We had a lot of gear to carry today and so we were unable to take the camera, so unfortunately, once again no pics. WE clambered down the entrance into the water and along the level to the first pitch. Carefully and quitly we went beneath the kerplunk like deads to the second pitch. This is a narrow one, which means you have to breath in a lot. I Retrieved the drill and fitted the bit and drilled a hole for a required deviation. Then on down... under many layers of precariously stacked deads, one above another. Eventually we arrived at **** Level where I installed some rubber sheet to help with a rub point. This worked well. I set off down the rope to the final pitch. This was where most of the work was needed. I drilled 2 holes & placed the anchors, tied on the rope & descended further down to a point where i drilled another hole for a deviation.
Soon Both Mrs Mustard & I were down on **** Level. As far down as we could go. Everything below here is flooded.
**** Level went both ways, so to the left I explored the passage beneath huge timbers holding serious quantities of deads. Soon a massive collapse blocked any further progress. The other way, progress was halted by there being no floor, just flooded stope.

We climbed back up to **** Level and explored it eastwards as far as the **** Shaft. It was at this point we could see dim daylight filtering down from the open stopes on the fellside. Unfortunatly for us, some idiot fell walkers decided it would be funny to chuck some rocks down the **** Shaft. Whilst we were in no real danger, the noise was alarming. Fortunatly they soon got bored & buggerd off somewhere else.

After lunch of chocolate bars & biscuits (good exploring food) we turned out attention to the **** shaft. Standing on the edge of this shaft is a sobering experience and a helluva sight to see. Mrs Mustard was very reluctant to let me drill holes here, because of the huge amount of deads above our heads. I decided to try anyway, a little distance away. The drills battery was dead Angry Damned annoying, but I was not really happy about drilling holes for anchors at that place anyway. I resolved to make a belay on another occasion with a scaffold pole. And so, the days work done we headed up & out.
On our way back to the car, we got talking with a couple of guys who were about to go diving in the flooded old engine shaft. Bloody 'ell !

Last night as Mrs Mustard was busy whooping it up with her mates, it was going to be the Colonels solo show. After receiving a useful snippet of information from **** at the weekend, I was eager to get back down to **** Level to attempt, once again to reach the fabled "****".

I arrived at the portal at about 6.30pm, quickly kitted up and set of down and along **** Level. The beauty of soloing on pre rigged pitches is speed of travel that is possible. I think it can only have about twenty minutes before I arrived at my goal. After an aborted digging exercise in a likely locality I continued on down to **** Level. What looked like previously blocked passage was in fact only partially blocked and **** Level continued on beyond Thumb Up

After some gardening work, I had a hole large enough to crawl through. Very carefully though, because there remained a huge timber pointing downwards into the passage that was held up by a solitary unstable rock. This looked like it would collapse if I even looked at it too strongly Crying

Soon I was through the dodgy bit and little further an awesome sight waited for me. The passage came to an abrupt end, terminated by the **** Shaft coming down from the surface many hundreds of feet above, and plunging down about a hundred feet to **** Level below. But wait, I saw a handline across the side of the shaft. Clipping in my cowstails, and an ascender, I whispered "'effin 'ell" 3 times and proceeded across. At the mid way point the maillon holding the rope onto the hanger was badly rusted, so I placed a backup karabiner into it in case the maillon should give way. Who knows how many years had passed since the rope was installed ? Up to the mid way point, there were good foot holds, but the second half of the traverse there were none, so it was a case of being suspended from the cowstails & pulling myself along the rope until I reached a large timber spanning the shaft. Once onto the timber I was easily able to gain the passageway Big Grin

I set up my camera and went exploring. **** Level in this remote extension was very colourful but also very eerie too. There were lots of strange mine noises. Very weird. The passage twisted round corner after corner until eventually I was greeted with an amazing sight. Finally there it was .. The ****. A sea of blue shining copper sulphate that seemed to pour out of the passage ceiling, down the wall & along the floor. A really beautiful sight to see and well worth the effort to get there. I followed the passage to the forehead some short distance further on, and commenced taking my photographs, working my way back towards the **** Shaft. By this time it was getting on a bit... Time I was leaving. Traversing back along the ropeway presented no difficulties, as did my ascent of the various pitches back to the surface. So after a brief stop to take some pics on the way up, I emerged into a thick rainy fog at about 9.30pm. Back down to the car, a quick change and with no tourists to hold me up, I was home by 10.10pm. Smile

What a way to end the week, another evening U/G trip... Wink
I did not have much time tonight, but I made the best of it. In at the **** Adit Level, up through the unstable excavation into the **** Vein and to the collapse area where I put in an hour & half of digging. The material is very wet so quite easy to dig. Very muddy though, I now know what it feels like to be a worm.

I took a few pics before heading home, and that all the U/G I am gonna get this weekend, because tomorrow, me & Mrs Mustard are doing a 40 mile sponsored walk. (What idiots Crying ) No doubt Sunday will be spent recovering....

No U/G since Friday, as both mine & Mrs Mustards legs are still recovering from Saturdays punishment and the only probings that have taken place is with a needle to pop our blisters.

Tomorrow I want to get back to the dig at **** ( Legs not well enough to carry me up to Levers Water entrance, so that will have to wait 'till later in the week) and try out me new Mustards designed, Patent Applied for digging tool

Cool eh ?

Not good news. Having taken my tunnel as far as can, I decided to try & see what the situation is like on the other side of the collapse. Unusually, this is possible in this case by abseiling down from another, higher level. This one has very large gaps where the false floor has completely collapsed. This evening I abseiled down through one of the gaps and arrived on the other side of the collapse. It does not actually look too bad, and intuition (only) tell me that I could very well be nearly through with the dig. The bad news is that the other end of the stope is also blocked by a very large quantity of material that has come down. So that would need another, bigger digging operation. Even worse, above this point is a section of very precariously positioned deads of considerable size, just waiting to come down & give me a headache... Sad

Me & Mrs Mustard decided to have an easy day on Bank holiday Monday so we went **** Slate Mines for photography practice. The results were better than last time, but there is still room for improvement which may now have to come from an investment in additional lighting.

Last night I descended a shaft that I have overlooked up to this point. I knew it was deep, but I was disappointed when my 50mtr was too short to reach the bottom. Ahh well, I'll just have to go back with an additional rope. Hopefully this weekend.

I am rapidly running short of ropes & anchors. Nearly all of my gear has been left rigged in various mines, gonna be a hard few days work stripping it all out again... Sad

Back to the deep shaft this morning. Speedily down the first two sections of the shaft carrying another rope (Oh the joy of pre-rigged descents) I had already placed the hangers so I soon had the second rope ready and off I dropped into the abyssal unknown. Well.. about 20mtrs. The shaft became a large stope near the bottom, the base of which sloped down to what I was looking for. A few years ago group excavated their way 60 feet vertically down to give access to a deeper part of the mine. I had heard that the dig was in a bad way, but when I got there, I could see that the shoring they had installed had totally collapsed. The side wall has caved in, totally blocking the way down.
So a much shorter adventure today that I had hoped.

Phew ! What an evening I have had !

I now have no more rope left. I have used my last 3 50mtr ropes, but quality underground only just begins to describe it. Sensational. But, tonight was a working trip busy rigging so going back on Wenesday evening for a proper explore and to get some pics....

Another evening underground. Or to put it more accurately another evening in an incredibly complex 3 dimensional maze comprising not easily walked along levels ar adits, but sphincter clenchingly deep stopes of seemingly bottomless depth. What levels exist are false floors. Mostly they only partially exist. Or dont exist at all, exposing yawning chasms below.
I am convinced that no-one can know this place entirely except perhapse the original explorers that started in the early 1970s. I am spending an evening with one of those guys soon. Maybe he will share some secrets, because although I have a lot of documentatioon relating to those early explorations.. relating it to the mine itself is ... practically impossible.
I need to be spending a lot more time in there.

Edit...

And I need a LOT more rope !!!!

Yesterday I had another unsavoury experience with a fixed SRT rope I came across whilst exploring. I used the rope as a handline to help myself along a narrow ledge. The rope then dissappeared upwards, so I clipped on my gear and climbed the 30 or so feet up the side of 2 rows of stacked deads on rotting timbers. I tried hard not to come into contact with those deads.. I got to the top of the rope where I could stand on a "bridge of deads" across te stope maybe 4feet wide. I looked at the anchor to which the rope was attached & was horrified to see the condition of the solitary hanger & bolt. The bolt was a corroded mess, so bad I could not make out what type it was. The hanger was loose & swivelled around, the maillon was a blitered rusting blobby thing.. Oh dear. Sad
The problem was, I had to go back down the same way that I came up....
Suffice to say - I survived. Again.

A good couple of hours U/G this evening. I had one of my new ropes so I was able to rig & descend a mystery stope. Half way down, I landed on a wooden platform. I moved some of the boards to make a hole large enough to get through and and continued on down to the bottom of the stope. Surprise, Surprise it brought me to a place that I recognised. Feeling rather pleased with myself for placing another piece in the jigsaw puzzle, I climbed back up de-rigged and did a bit of exploring. I found some new ground which included a very fine artifact - the remains of a jackrol that I had not seen before. Big Grin
I left the rope up there for other descents later on in the week and made my way out. It started to pour down about 1 minute after I got inside the car. Smile

Yesterday evening me & Mrs Mustard spent the evening visiting a legendary mine explorer & Alpine mountaineer(Climbed all of the 4000 foot peaksin the alps). We spent the evening poring over his wonderful mine plans, drinking wine & listening to his stories including the horrendous time when he saw two German Mountaineers in front of him plunge to their deaths whilst descending the matterhorn Sad
Respect to you, Sir... your the real deal and a true gent.

Today whilst Mrs Mustard was at work I spent a sensational day in a Nenthead mine with "Hardcore Heb". Lots of knee deep water...waist deep water...chest deep water... neck deep water..... lovely 8) Nice to finally meet you, Heb Smile

There has been so many underground trips recently, currently 3 to 4 per week, but I have neglected this journal too long.

Tonight I received a very interesting tip from LAP, so quickly gathrered some kit together and made my way to Tilberthwaite. I walked across the valley up to Moss Rigg quarry. This is a really large pit to which I had paid ony cursory attention to before, not realising that there could be some U/G to be had there. LAP was correct (Thanks Old Bean Wink ) Very intersting evening. !

Bloody sensational evening U/G. I went up, then down, then up, then up again, then down, then up then down then down some more. What all this add up to is my moving one of my ropes from one place to another place. Then going doewn said rope about 100' penduling sideways along the stope, to try and get a foothold on a collapsing rubble slope with nothing below except 300' of air. I had previously thought that I would have to contruct a horizontal traverse line across the wall of the stope to enable any further progress, but you know, sometimes you just gotta grab the bull by the horns & go for it !
I just about made it with some gymnastic like manouevers. Once onto the slope, I had to climb a very shaky looking wall. I did this by bridging my body across the stope, facing downwards, hands outstretched, legs out behind. I then managed to get a foot hold and was then able to clamber up and into a passage which brought me into another huge stope. I further passage dissapeared around the corner, but this will need a handline to get round. I had been wanting to get to this place for ages, so I am chalking up tonights venture a big success.
A quick phone call when I got out confirmed that it is certainly worth installing a handline to gain the passage around the corner 8)

After last weekend exploring big wide dry stone mines in Wiltshire, this weekend it was normal service resumed. Back to the smaller and much wetter passages of Nenthead to photograph the Rampgll horse gin. This fine artifact is in danger of being rendered innaccessible due to the excavated access shaft nipping in. When the original digging team installed their shoring, they did not account for countless explorers using their bracing steelwork sections as a climbing aid. The result is those steel sections have now twisted and buckled and have become innefectual, allowing the shaft to narrow considerably.(On the plus side, it does not seem to have narrowd since my last inspection in February) Sometime soon the shaft will totally close up and so I thought it a good time to photograph the Gin before this happens.
We used my electron ladder to rig the shaft and made our way along the Scaleburn Vein, took photos and then descended down a slot in the adit floor into a quite large ore flat working below. This was an interesting area which we had not visited previously.
We then made our way back up the ladder and went to inspect the shaft connection to the Gudhamgill Mine before making our way out. Whilst getting changed at the car, Roy Fellows who happened to be passaing stopped for a chat.

An excellent couple of hours U/G this evening. I had intended to do 3 jobs and this meant lugging 50mtr of rope, a big 24v SDS battery drill and a bag of rigging gear. I got to the entrance and kitted up and switched on my lamp.... only thing was it was already switched on !! In disgust, I started to select the appropriate swear words, but on checking the battery connectiom I found that it was undone. What a relief.. Now I rememered. I had attached another battery to the lamp last night to check it. So back to the mission. I hauled the gear along the level the climed about 30 mtr up one my installed ropes, then up a large and tricky slope to eventually arrive nackered and sweating at where I needed to be. This was a passage that opens into a big deep stope. I had pre rigged this, so onto the rope I went and descended about 100'. Swinging sideways in the stope I gained the rubble slope and left the rope behind. At tis point I dislodged a few rocks that went tumbling over the edge making a horrible booming noise as they dissapeared on down.. and down. very very deep.. about 300 deep Crying
The first job was to install a looped knotted line to assist climbing up the rubble slope. This went well with no problems. Now it is much easier and safer to scale the rubble slope. Further on a short passage opens out into another huge stope. This was the site of jobs 2 & 3.
I wanted to install a traverse around a corner to gain a passage that seemed to disappear out of site. I got half way round but there was no passage there. It was merely the stope bending around a bend. No passage, no floor.
The last job of the evening was to install new anchors to enable me to descend the big stope. This went well and I was able to rig a nice Y hang. Collecting all my gear together I started on down the rope. This was not exactly new ground as I kne presicely where the base of this stope was and before long I was back on the access level and on my way out. I now have 3 ways down from the upper reaches of the mine, the most recent one being the most interesting and the most sporting.. Big Grin

Me & Mrs Mustard met up with LAP & Allan last night in a wild remote area of deepest deserted Lakeland just as dusk was approaching. Wary sheep watched first one car, then another appear. 4 people swiftly made their way up the track and on into a large Slate mine. Three & half hours later, after a superb explore, 4 dim caplamps swiftly descended thru the darkness & Cumbrian rain to the 2 waiting cars. Hushed farewells were exchanged before one, then another of the two cars disappeared into the rainy blackness of the Cumbrian night.....
