I am looking to buy a couple of safety lamps for gas testing bad air etc
there seems to be hundreds of replicas mainly emanating
from E Thomas Williams in Wales
IYHO which would be the best lamp to buy that is a guaranteed original underground fully functional working lamp ?
I am looking at Eccles lamps , but even some of these look like ornaments

any advise welcome

Thanks Andy

Yes you would be best off with a GR6S, or even a type 6. This was the earlier & almost identical model, just didn't posses the "Garforth" testing port. Both are re-lighter's, so ideal for your needs. A word of warning, just because it says Type 6 or GR6S on the nameplate, doesn't mean that's what it is. Quite a few out there have been built up from odd bits. If you see one on ebay, let me know & I'll give it the once over (or someone on the forum will) Just to be pedantic, they aren't *Eccles* Smile Eccles is the district of Manchester, where they were made...Good luck with it.

edited cos I can't spell...

Mike, protectors are the lamps the OP referred to as "Eccles".

The Protector Lamp & Lighting Co, Makers, Eccles.

The confusion arises due to the "Makers" appearing just above the "Eccles" on the nameplate design...

Proctors are still in production and are the ones supplied to light the Olympic torches
The only problem is they cost £360 new , that is why i'm looking at used lamps

For example on the auction site
This one is good to have (if complete)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mining-miners-pit-lamp-eccles-type-6-b-28-/261088777320?pt=UK_Collectables_Memorabila_RL&hash=item3cca1a9468
Steer away from the SL lamps as they are very difficult to light

This is ok but expensive
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OFFICALS-ECCLES-PROTECTOR-GR6S-MINING-MINERS-LAMP-/320970273834?pt=UK_Collectables_Memorabila_RL&hash=item4abb51b42a

This might be a sleeper
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/genuine-eccles-deputies-miners-lamp-/120975435817?pt=UK_Collectables_Memorabila_RL&hash=item1c2ab2a829

The first one would be fine. OK it's aimed at the tourist market but it's a proper safety lamp, produced on the same tooling as the "permitted" lamps. An advantage is it will be virtually brand new inside, might never have been lit. Also, you won't need to mess around with the magnetic lock, as this one is a lead rivet type. I'd go for this or one like it...

Thanks again for the help and info
in the last two weeks i have bought two Protector (not proctor) Type 6 lamps both seem to be brand new and are in imaculate condition after a quick clean they look fantastic
They both had flints in the strikers which seemed to have swelled up and jammed s, so i removed them , fitted new flints and both lamps fire up
I am using meths at the mo but was wondering what you guys use in yours ?
i have searched the net and know the correct fuel is colazlene
which is no longer available
also heard solvent 40 solvent 20 or naptha , ronson / zippo lighter fuel etc

once again well made up my two lamps are stunning well made pieces of British mining history and now i just want to fill my house with the buggers !
THANKS AGAIN ANDY

Ligthter fluid is the stuff to use, probably the closest to the original Colza oil...

P.S. don't try filling your house with 'em, I tried that over 40 yrs ago, an' it's still not full Laugh

Yes, that particular one took 30yrs to come along. It was a prototype developed in 1959 & only issued to a limited number of pits, on a trial basis.
Don't let that put you off tho'...sounds like you've got the bug Thumbs Up

No, not you. You just need to know that the vessels are packed with sponge, so the lamp won't spill if it's knocked over. When done in the lamproom the job would be done quickly & the spillage (overflow) caught for re-use.
Use something like a syringe or just the nozzle on the lighter fluid tin & stop when fluid remains in the bottom of the lock filler. If you squint down the lock there will be two holes, once the fuel is about halfway up the lower one, this will be enough. The excess fuel will then soak into the sponges...hope this helps...
