A few of us had a chat about a trip down to Rhiw, Llyn Peninsula this week for a look at Nant Gadwen manganese mine:
http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Nant-Gadwen-Manganese-Mine-Manganese-Mine

Underground is a little limited as most of the workings are flooded, but there's still access to a decent sized chamber and a few hundred yards of tunneling. Also plenty of scope for swimming if you're 'ard enough! A second extensive chamber is open to the air and I assume leads through to the aforementioned one.
Overground there's a fair bit to see, and it's a nice place for a walk with a path leading down to a pleasant beach.

So, think you might be interested?

I should be ok for this, though it may be my last Thursday Night Trip before my Olympics/Turkey/Cyprus jaunt.

Flooded chambers are no problem Thumbs Up

Where to meet and when? Smile

Because it's a challenge.....it's a challenge for me and it's a challenge for the coracle. But mainly because it's been done before....

When? I'm easy as I'll already be nearby. How about 6.30pm to give everyone time to get there?

This would be a good place to meet:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=205917042449648694069.0004c58348b6393da853f&msa=0&ll=52.825885,-4.610739&spn=0.009193,0.016694
It's a small car park at NW end of Porth Neigwl, below Rhiw mountain.

I should be about for this one providing they don't break anything on the railway, may bring a friend or two if it's suitable? They won't be up for a swim or SRT but will be OK walking over and underground. Should I chuck the SRT in the car?

Nice one Owain. It's eminently suitable for novices.
Getting down into the open chamber is a bit of a scramble, helped by a rope. I've done it without, but if you could bring one along it would be good. I'll try to remember one too. I'm not aware of any scope for SRT.
I wasn't serious about the swim in the mine, though there is the beach if anyone fancies a dip.

One idea...
The large chamber has a flooded pit/shaft that looks very deep. You can't see the bottom and I've always wondered what's down there. I rather fancy lowering a camera down, and even got as far as buying an old video camera with the idea of sealing it into a waterproof, see-through bag with a light. I never got around to buying the bag, so if anyone has anything suitable or a better idea, perhaps we could give it a go.

You will need to put it in a pressure tight container, the external pressure will damage components in the camera, I accidently took a phone on a shallow dive in my drysuit, it lasted a couple of weeks then shorted out and tried to set fire to my bol****s Shocked

The camera was cheap enough to be considered sacrificial so I'm prepared to risk pressure damage. There's also a real risk of it snagging on something and never coming back to the surface, which is why I don't want to invest much in it.

But bearing in mind your narrow escape, I'll keep it away from my swonnicles!

Try one of those ridged waterproof transparent food boxes with clips on all four sides, give me a size and material and I might be able to calculate the depth it'll survive. (Don't think supermarkets are likely to have implosion limits in the specs for these.)

Sorry guys, but I won't get there either Sad
My plan for a 1600 hrs finish won't happen and I won't be off site untill 1800 at the earliest and it's just too far to travel I'm afraid!
I will however manage next Thursday night, the 2nd if anyone fancies doing something? Flowers

Following that I am away for three weeks..... Big Grin

The next "scheduled" Thursday Nighters trip will then be the "Life and Death Underground" trip with Corris Mine Explorers at Braich Goch on Wednesday the 29th, which I for one am really looking forward to Thumbs Up
