Proceedings of the Welsh Mines Society Conference 2007

The Welsh Mines Society was formed in 1978 following an informal gathering of mining historians at Dylife mine. It is an active society that runs many well-organised field trips and produces an excellent newsletter.
The Lode of History is the first volume of Welsh Mines and Mining; a compilation of papers presented at, and arising from, the 2007 conference of the same name which celebrated the distinguished and influential contribution made to British mining history of WMS founding member David Bick.
This is no lightweight volume, each of the thirteen papers is detailed, thorough and informative. Each is from a different author and all of these authors are respected names within the multitude of academic, industrial and historical fields that mining history encompasses. This includes, but is not limited to, early and more recent mining history and techniques, geology, metallurgy, archaeology, preservation and social history.
The bulk of the papers cover, as one would expect, Welsh mines and mining topics, however this does extend to mines and topics outside of Wales where relevant as per the WMS’ policy.
Read this book properly and you will come away with two things. Firstly an increased knowledge of, and appreciation for, the subject matters covered by the papers, and secondly a great respect for the authors, for their knowledge, and for their time given in researching and preparing these papers and sharing that knowledge.
The detail contained within the papers is such that picking favourites is difficult, if not a little unfair. However I found 'Unraveling William Waller's Cwmystwyth', 'The Miners’ Lot', 'The Bryntail and Glyn Mines' and 'The Penclyn Mine' particularly interesting. But therein is the success of this publication, each paper is different and reflects the different areas of expertise of the authors. In turn, each reader, with their own personal interests, will take something different from this book.
Papers are supported throughout with black and white photographs and detailed references, and, where appropriate, tabular data as well as plans and illustrations. Quality of presentation, clarity and consistency is excellent throughout.
The Lode of History costs £9.75 (WMS members £7.50) plus £1.15 postage. To order a copy please contact Dave Linton, address: Hendre Coed Uchaf, Llanaber, Barmouth LL42 1AJ, telephone: 01341 280901 or email: dave.linton@hendrecoed.org.uk.
Thoroughly recommended.
