Working in the mills 3: Ex-glassplate print. I've got this shot both ways round, so I'm not sure which is correct. Either way, it's an interesting study! (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-056) Working in the mill 2: Ex-glass plate print. Splitting the blocks, no wagons in sight -I presume they have either been removed or you can't see them for the slabs piled on them! (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-055) Working in the Mill 1: Ex-glass plate print. Splitting and dressing - note no guard on the dresser! (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-054) Wharf at Minffordd: From a 1920's publicity brochure. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-053) Signalling on an Incline: From a 1920's publicity brochure - I suspect this is actually the Inside the Mills: From a publicity brochure of the 1920's (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-051) Back Vein Incline: Again from a 1920's publicity brochure. My guess is that the steam is from an engine driving a compressor, as the engine and boiler house was at this time on the opposite side. Note the four tracks! (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-050) Mills from Rhiwbach No.3 Incline: Taken from a publicty brochure of the 1920's - the phot being pre-1924, when the workshops were begun. It shows one of Maenofferen's steam locos on the waste tip run. The electric building is in place. The mill does not seem to have the smaller chimneys, but the main chimney is visible just over the roof, a different shape from the ventilators. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-049) Mills under construction: ANother ex-glassplate shot. This time showing the western end of the long mill. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-047) The Maenofferen Mills 3/4 built: Lots of detail in this one - taken from an original print from a glass negative. Interesting gearing to get the drive from the right hand mill with the water wheel to the left hand one. Original photo was taken between 1889 and 1900. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-045) Stacking yard late 1930's (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-044) Maen, location unknown??? (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-043) Photo outside mill (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-042) Rhiwbach No.2 Incline foot in 1981: The floristry had not yet regained the incline at this time! (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-041) 1920 Incline Drumhouse -1981: A view from the southern side, showing it's location relative to the mills. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-040) 1920 Incline Drumhouse - 1981: A view looking through the drumhouse towards Votty (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-039) 1920 Incline Drumhouse - 1981: This incline was constructed in 1920 to enable Maenofferen to avoid using the Rhiwbach tramway and thus paying its increased tolls. When the quarry bought Rhiwbach, it was abandoned. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-038) Maenofferen Back Vein Incline in 1981: A closer view from just above the open quarry looking across the Back Vein Incline head towards the tunneller level in the distance. The Maenofferen in 1981: Viewed from a Diffwys tip looking North. In the distance is the David Jones' Quarry with the tunneller level visible just to the right of the chimney. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-036) MaenOfferen in 1981: The classic view of the mills from the Rhiwbach Incline (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-035) MaenOfferen in 1981: Turning still more to the west the auxiliary buildings and main mills come into view. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-034) David Jones' Quarry in 1981: Turning towards the west slightly the ruins of the David Jones' Quarry in 1981: One of a sequence of shots from just beside the Rhiwbach incline looking roughly southwards. The level visible in the open quarry led to the so-called Hunter's Tunneller 1864: This drawing is based on the original 1864 patent drawings for the single core Tunneller. There was a developed version patented jointly by W F Cooke and G Hunter in 1866 which included the double-borer head. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-031) Old quarry Tunneller Trial in 1981: Inside the bores it is obvious that each one was done separately. One might guess that only one machine was available. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-028) Old quarry Tunneller Trial in 1981: Again, the bores are impressive in size, with part of a core still in situ. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-027) Old quarry Tunneller Trial in 1981: Above the old open Quarry is another trial of the single tunneller. In the centre of the picture, with another conventional level above it. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-026) Cookes Level Entrance 1981: Looking back from the conventional level towards the tunneller section. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-018) Cookes Level Entrance 1981: The last tunneller section (2-bore) with the conventional level driven beyond it. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-017) Cookes Level Entrance 1981: The mine doorway. In front of it thw level was driven either by a 4-cutter tunneller, or the 2-cutter tunneller twice. Beyond the door only the upper bores are present. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-016) Cookes Level Entrance 1981: The entrance to the level driven in 1868 by the Maen Offeren Company. It is almost certain the machine cut section was driven earlier than this - possibly in 1866 or so. (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-015) ERF A series lorry belonging to the mine approx 1988 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-014) Air winch deep underground approx 1993: Air winch used for loading slate blocks onto a rail wagon (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-013) Excavator working deep underground approx 1993 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-012) Wire saw operating machine approx 1993 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-011) Using a wire saw to remove slate approx 1993 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-010) Man carrying wagon at winding shed approx 1993 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-009) Margret E. Jones the manager's daughter who died in 1892 aged 24 (Maenofferen-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-008)
